Listen and find out what it is. Don't criticize it for not being what it should be according to your preconceived terminology.
Don't put down the efforts of anyone who tried to cope with Duke Ellington, provoking as these efforts may be. Avoid irony. Put your criticism of critics, admirers, self-appointed partners in jazz composition a.o. into your waste basket.
Follow these rules even with people who do not follow these rules.
